REVIEW: American Hustle

Posted on Posted in Film

I think it took watching American Hustle 3 times before I fully appreciated it. And by “appreciate” I mean understand. The first time I was super confused. The second time I was super bored. And the third time I finally got it.

The truth is that I was expecting Silver Linings Playbook (same Director/Writer and lots of the same cast). In case you don’t know me, I loved Silver Linings Playbook. I think I watched it about 10 times and it was on my Top Movies of 2012 list. So if you’re expecting that, American Hustle will not be what you think.

American Hustle is also being billed as a comedy. Most of the “comedy” in the film comes from how over-the-top everyone reacts to things. Also, Christian Bale’s horrible combover, Amy Adams’ ridiculous English accent and Bradley Cooper’s early Justin Timberlake curls. Also Jennifer Lawrence’s general existence because she’s hilarious.

The film tells the true story of a few con artists who help catch several politicians being bribed. Although I find it hard to believe that most of the details are in any way true and if they are, we need to take a serious look as to why anyone in the U.S. Government would hire Bradley Cooper’s character. There’s love, money and intrigue. But for all of us non-criminal types, it’s hard to keep up with who is good, bad or just plain ugly. While I think overall the film is too long, I enjoy the concept and think the script is awesome. I think it’s funny but more of a quiet chuckle to myself and not an LOL. So yes, I think people should see this movie. My only advice is to lower your expectations. Then you’ll be pleasantly surprised 🙂
